Driven to Waste: Global Food Loss on Farms, a new report from WWF and Tesco, According to a report by WWF and Tesco, an estimated 2.5 billion tonnes of food is wasted annually worldwide, a significant increase from the previous estimate of 1.3 billion tonnes. The report highlights that approximately 40% of all food produced goes uneaten, surpassing the earlier estimated figure of 33%. The focus of the report is on food losses occurring on farms during harvests, slaughter, and afterwards. The data reveals the need to address food loss and waste throughout the entire supply chain, emphasizing the importance of reducing waste at all stages, not just in retail and consumption. Additionally, wasted food has a substantial impact on climate change, accounting for about 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, which is equivalent to the emissions produced by all cars driven in the US and Europe in a year. The production of this wasted food also utilizes vast amounts of land and water resources, equivalent to a landmass larger than the Indian subcontinent and a water volume equal to 304 million Olympic swimming pools.
